Emerald Green Vertical Tile Backsplash in Adair Park
About This Project
A kitchen backsplash in a renovated Adair Park craftsman home, where the homeowner chose a glossy emerald green tile set vertically rather than in the standard horizontal orientation. The tile is a 2x6 inch format with a slightly irregular glaze surface typical of handmade-style tile, which gives the wall texture and depth that a perfectly uniform machine-made tile would not have.
Setting this tile vertically required a different reference line approach than a horizontal layout. The primary vertical plumb line was established from the center of the most visible corner, and tiles were set plumb in columns rather than level in rows. The slight irregularity in the glaze surface meant grout joint widths needed to accommodate minor size variation in individual tiles — we used a 1/16-inch spacer but checked each column visually rather than relying on spacers alone. The white countertop and light beige flat-front cabinets were chosen to let the green tile be the statement element without competition.
