Gray Slate-Look Kitchen Floor in Adair Park
About This Project
A kitchen floor replacement in an Adair Park home that had been updated with white shaker cabinets and a professional-grade stainless range, but still had the original 1970s vinyl floor. The new floor is a 16x24 gray slate-look porcelain with a textured matte surface that handles kitchen wear and cleaning well.
The Adair Park home had a wood subfloor with a slight crown running down the center of the kitchen — a common condition in older construction where the floor joists have dried and pulled slightly. The high point was approximately 3/8 inch above the low points near the walls. Rather than installing cement board over this uneven surface and transferring the variation into the tile, we used a self-leveling underlayment to bring the subfloor to within 3/16 inch in 10 feet before cement board was installed. The tile was then set with a 1/8-inch grout joint using a dark gray grout that complements the tile's natural tone variation.
