Dark Slate Kitchen Floor in Capitol View
About This Project
A kitchen floor installation in a Capitol View home that had been renovated with white shaker cabinets, a kitchen island, and stainless appliances. The existing floor was a dated linoleum that had been in place for decades. The replacement is a 12x24 dark gray slate-look porcelain with a matte finish, which creates a strong visual contrast with the white cabinetry and works practically as a kitchen floor that hides dirt between cleanings.
The kitchen island presented the primary layout challenge. With a fixed island in the center of the room, the tile layout needed to be planned so the grout lines around the island base looked intentional — either a full tile width on both sides or a consistent cut on both sides, not an accidental partial tile on one side and a different partial on the other. We dry-laid the pattern around the island footprint before setting any tile to confirm the layout worked visually. The final layout used a centered approach from the island's long axis, which resulted in approximately equal cut pieces at the walls on both sides.
