White Subway Tile Kitchen Backsplash in Capitol View

White square subway tile kitchen backsplash installed behind gas cooktop with gray cabinets in a Capitol View home

About This Project

A kitchen backsplash in a Capitol View home that had been updated with new gray cabinets and a gas cooktop but still had painted drywall behind the range. The owners chose a classic 4x4 white subway tile in a horizontal stacked pattern, which works well with the gray cabinet color and keeps the kitchen feeling open.

The section behind the gas cooktop required particular attention. Standard mastic adhesive is not suitable for use behind a gas range because the heat from the burners can soften the adhesive over time, causing tiles to de-bond. We used a heat-rated polymer-modified thinset in the zone within 12 inches of the cooktop, transitioning to standard thinset for the rest of the backsplash run. The cabinet above the cooktop had an existing exhaust hood opening that required the tile to be cut and fitted around the wood cabinet frame — those cuts were made with a wet saw and fit tightly before the cabinet was reinstalled.
