Gray Marble Bathtub Surround in West End
About This Project
A bathtub surround replacement in a West End home where the original plastic surround had separated from the wall and was allowing moisture behind it. The replacement used a large-format gray marble-look porcelain tile in a staggered horizontal offset pattern across three walls of the tub enclosure.
Before any tile was set, the existing surround was removed and the wall framing was inspected for moisture damage. The studs behind the original surround showed early-stage moisture staining that was treated and dried before cement board was installed as the new substrate. A liquid-applied waterproof membrane was applied to the cement board and allowed to cure before tile was set. The tile joints at the tub-to-wall transition were finished with matching silicone rather than grout, creating a movement joint that flexes with the tub without cracking.
